Manufacturing in the North East
At the back end of last year, I had the pleasure of jumping on a train and visiting Self Made Studios in Bishop Auckland, and what a joy it was!
I have worked with the lovely team at Self Made Studios in the past so it was a real pleasure to be able to go visit in person. Given that I’ve recently moved back to the North East, it was at the top of my to-do list to arrange. I love getting to see behind the scenes of a manufacturer and watch production in real time.
So, what are Self Made Studios? They’re a fashion design and clothing manufacturer, working to help start up and established brands with their design development and low MOQ production. Just from spending a short amount of time with the team, it was really evident that there is an abundance of experience and skill across the team to offer to their customers.
What I really love about this studio is the real, genuine passion to create products of quality, they don’t promote shortcuts or a quick fix, they work with customers in creating garments you are proud to share.
The studio has been up and running for approx. 5 and a half years, it is a social enterprise and the team is passionate about providing skills and jobs to local people in the North East (a big yes to this from me!). I think there is something really special about bringing fashion jobs to various parts of the country and providing options for those people who want to work in the industry, without having to relocate is a great idea. Also, increasing local manufacturing, which of course is a big aspect of the sustainability conversation.
What do they offer?
Low minimum order quantities
Sampling and development support
CMT manufacturing (cut, make, trim)
Made in the UK
A friendly & supportive team!
Ethically made fashion here in the UK is something many brands are looking for, if this is you, check out Self Made Studios. But as it goes with all manufacturing options, it might not be the right fit for you. You will need to consider your price point, your customer, your product type (finishes required), your fabric needs, and so on. If you want some guidance in sourcing and choosing the right suppliers for your business, I can help you!
